I tend to update these fairly often so it is quite likely that they are already out of date. If you want the most recent version of any of these please contact me at owen-christopher@yale.edu and I can mail them to you. All of these files are for Hermes II 1.0.1. Auto Backup 2.5.2 : 22k+:Automatic nightly backup of important Hermes files Auto Backup allows you to select which files to backup and has an option to use Stuffit Engine to compress backups which saves 70-95%. Save up to 20 days worth of backups files in very little disk space or save all the important data in a single archive. Backup Shared Files, Messages, Data, Logs, Forms, Misc and GFiles folders. You chose the time for the backup and backup up to once an hour. Backs up this BBS at 3 am each night. Auto Fade 2.5.1 : 18k+:Auto Fade is a screen saver just for Hermes Auto Fade is the original screen saver for Hermes. It can be set to simply fade the screen to black, show who is online and what they are doing or if they want to chat, or draw lines when no one is around. It will also display their reason for chat. The display can be set large enough to be seen from across the room. It can be set to automatically just fade to black when you aren't around or asleep and don't want the display. It will handle multiple monitors. It is stable and runs under System 6 or 7. Running in the background right now Auto Purge 2.5.6 : 18k+:Automatic deletion of inactive users Auto Purge is a utility to automatically or manually delete users who have not logged on in a set amount of time. In the automatic mode Auto Purge will go through the user list each day at a time you choose and mark as deleted those who have not logged on in a certain number of days. Also deletes mail to/from user. It has an undelete feature which will undelete users that are deleted with Auto Purge. Auto Reboot 2.5.2 : 17k+:Automatic reboot, shutdown or quit Hermes Auto Reboot is a means of automatically quiting Hermes, rebooting your machine or shutting down the power on your Macintosh at a predetermined time and up to every hour after that. The reboot option is good for cleaning up memory that Hermes, Hermes externals or other programs might have mucked up. Shutting down or quitting might appeal to you if you only run the board for a set period and would like your computer to turn off after that time. Batch Reminder 2.5 : 3k+:Warns users before logging off with full batch Batch Reminder will warn users who try to log off with files in their batch download queue. They will then have the opportunity to abort and return to the BBS, continue with the logoff or go directly to the batch download menu. BBIB-->HRMS 4.3.1 : 24k+:Converter for BBS in A Box descriptions BBIB-->HRMS is a utility to convert the file directories found on AMUGs "BBS in a Box" into a form suitable for use with the Hermes BBS. This version allow you to convert the files directly off the CD, upload all the .db files with a single command, set the uploader name and add suffixes and prefixes like [ROM] or [CD] to the directory names. Results can be seen on this BBS. Board Cleaner 2.5.2 : 23k+:"Cleans" BBS transfer sections Board Cleaner will clean up transfer sections by adjusting file sizes to real file sizes, resetting obviously wrong upload dates, compressing uncompressed files, converting Compact Pro and Stuffit 1.5.1 files to Stuffit Deluxe format, stripping .sea code, removing non-existent files from the transfer directories and add or remove file extensions (.cpt/.sit). Some functions require other software, PLEASE read the docs. BulletinManager2.5.2: 31k+:Informational bulletin displaying external Display information bulletins at logon, externals menu and from main menu. Bulletins can be mandatory or optional. "Tri-level" bulletins can be automatically displayed to users according to their security level. Up to 20 "Regular" bulletins can be displayed from a bulletin menu. The menu or any of the individual bulletins can also be mandatory or optional. Bulletins can be stored anywhere. Can be sampled on this BBS. Delete Account 2.5.1: 4k+:Allow users to delete their own account Delete Account gives users the option of deleting their own account. Should help keep the inactive accounts down. They are just marked as deleted in the normal way that Hermes deletes users so it is possible to recover a user by just unmarking the deleted field of their user record. Can be used on this BBS. FILES.BBSConvert1.0b: 16k+:Converter for FILES.BBS descriptions FILES.BBS Convert is a utility to convert the file directories found on many IBM CDs into a form suitable for use with the Hermes BBS. This version allow you to convert the files directly off the CD, upload all the FILES.BBS files with a single command, set the uploader name and add suffixes and prefixes like [ROM] or [CD] to the directory names. Finger 2.5.1 : 10k+:Like UNIX program finger. Get info on other users. This external is allows users to get information on other users like computer type, when they first and last logged on, last read mail, gender, age, signature, etc. All these can be customized for registered users. User types //FINGER and chooses user name and it displays all their info. Can be used on this BBS. Fix Paths 2.5 : 4k+:Strip pathnames from file descriptions Fix Paths will strip the pathname from all the files in a directory. This will tell Hermes that the files can be found in the folder for that directory. This will let you recover the file descriptions for files that are no longer stored along the old pathname. To use it run it on the directory data files and move all the files from that directory to the folder for that directory. Hermes Toolbox 1.1 : 41k+:Info for THINK Pascal library of external utils The Hermes Toolbox is a library which allows external writers to automatically incorporate all the procedures and functions in it into their own externals. The file contains a brief readme and the interface file for the library. It aso has a small example of how the Toolbox is used. Several new functions have been added in this version. With this library writing quality externals is a much easier process. HUX 2.5 : 29k+:DOS or Unix-like shell for Hermes H/UX is an external which attempts to mimic many of the commands that are available with UNIX or DOS systems. Once installed it will allow the sysop (or any user with appropriate access) to use Hermes from remote to list, rename, move or delete files, create or delete folders and read text files on any mounted volume, launch and quit applications and tell what is running at all times. Additionally, it makes it possible to restart or shutdown the computer remotely. Keyware, Hermes II List Text 2.5.1 : 4k+:List up to 10 text files by // commands List Text will list up to ten text files that can each be assigned to a // command. For instance //NET would list instructions for using netmail. All ten commands and text files can be set by the sysop. Logoff Manager 2.5.5: 28k+:Logoff stats and new caller killer/keeper Logoff Manager displays a variety of reports when a user logs off. In addition it will display a custom message to each user depending on their upload/download ratio. It also can ask user if they want to leave feedback at logoff. First time users are displayed a custom text file and then asked if they want to join the BBS. If they say no their account is automatically deleted. Should help keep user files down. Can be seen on this BBS Logon Manager 2.5.7 : 27k+:ANSI logon display and 2 dimension usage graphs Logon Manager displays an attractive list of today's callers at logon. It shows who called, where they called from, when they logged on and off, how many messages they posted, how many downloads, how many uploads, and which node they were connected. Logon Manager also gathers appropriate data and will display a graph of the amount of time your Hermes BBS is in usage. There are 4 graphs available in Logon Manager -- Today's Usage, Average Hourly Usage, Average Weekly Usage, and Average Monthly Usage. Can be used here. Network Access 2.5 : 4k+:Allows boards to use handles while networking Network Access works in conjunction with Handler, by Craig Struble, or another utility which handles aliases for networking purposes. It asks the caller to provide their real first and last names in order to gain access to networked message areas. If the user does provide them, they are automatically entered into the Handler "Aliases" file and a restriction flag is changed giving them access to the Networked areas. NewUserManager2.5.5 : 69k+:Automate setting up new user accounts New User Manager asks new users a series of informational questions and then up to 8 configurable yes or no questions. Based on the responses to those questions it also sets an initial security level, forum access and restriction codes. All responses are saved in a number of formats including in one large file, a tabbed file and as GFiles. Also adds visiting sysops BBS information to the BBS list. Great way to help automate the process of adding new users. You used it to log on here. Node Guard 2.5 : 9k+:Limit access to each node by restriction code Node Guard will allow you to limit access to your BBS on a node by node basis. You set a restriction code for a node and only users with that code can log on to that node. Other users see a text file that you can customize and then are logged off. There is also a setting which will also allow the user to read their mail before they are logged off. NuPatch 1.0 : 6k+:All user skip over "NewScan" message All users are skipped over the "Scan for new messages to you" prompt with this external installed. Offline QWK 2.1 : 52k+:QWK offline mail reader external Offline QWK will create QWK mail packets that users can download and read offline. The QWK format is support by most offline readers on most platforms. Three forms of compression are supported, Stuffit, Zip and a built in compression scheme which creates a .sea for download. QWK packets can be downloaded directly from the external or added to the batch for later download with other files. Can be used on this BBS. Othello 2.5.13 : 23k+:One or two player version of board game Othello is a two person board game. You can also play one person against the computer. (it is a pretty good opponent I warn you) See the file 'Othello rules' for details on the game itself. It is a very easy game to learn, but will keep you interested if you have someone good to play against. This version of it is completely multi-node, including a simple message system that will let you chat at you play someone. Can be played on this BBS. Quote Manager 2.5 : 48k+:Random Quote display and powerful quote creation QuoteManager displays a single quote during the logon process. The quote selection is randomized, as is the dividing lines which help separate it from the rest of the logon text. QuoteManager also allows the Sysop and the Caller to display and enter quotes from the Externals List. QuoteManager comes with about 60 quotes and automatically formats new quotes in both text and ANSI formats. Can be used on this BBS. Record Launch 2.5 : 7k+:Record all launches and quits of Hermes Record Launch will stamp the current time to the daily log each time Hermes starts up or quits. This is useful for revealing crashes or determining when scheduled restarts with utilities like Auto Reboot happen. Also serves as a record of when BBS is down. Reports Manager2.5.1: 22k+:Generates reports on users and system data Reports Manager will create text file reports on both user and system data. Create lists of user personal data, security data, computer type and activity. Create system lists that give break down of all security levels, message base, GFiles and transfer section security information. All reports can be created in tab delimited form. Perfect compliment to User Manager. Makes setting up and maintaining BBS much easier. User Manager 2.5.3 : 39k+:User record editor and other related functions User Manager will update all user records according to certain criteria. Global and conditional changes can be made to all users for SL, Restrictions, Forum and Sub access and NewScan settings. Control access to the transfer sections with a monthly file quota system. Display recent uploads on entry to transfer sections. Automatically or manually purge old users. Many other useful features.
